Current Graduate Students

The following image galleries show examples of the research my current graduate students are doing.
Nicholas Haney (Master's)

Nicholas has a B.S. in Geography from Jacksonville State Univeristy in Alabama.  His thesis involves hydrologic and hydraulic modeling of alluvial bench erosion and depostion to determine the flow conditions that either maintain or destroy benches.  He is working in two streams located in Alabama - Talladega and Hillabee Creeks.  Nick's work will help address the larger questions Dan Royall (UNC-Greensboro) and I have been pondering concerning whether benches in the southern Piedmont are more influenced by decedal drought cycles or historic landuse change.

Ryan Vaughn (Master's)

Ryan has a B.S. in Environmental Science from UA.  His thesis research is being conducted in the plant patches of the bedrock shoals of the Cahaba River of AL.  He is trying to identify the geomorphic factors that help determine macrophyte patch density in the shoals.  I will use the results of Ryan's work to help improve the existing shoal habitat model.  His results should allow me to ammend the predicitive equation to allow it to be used to predict plant patch area and density based on geomorphic characteristics alone.

Allison Tarbox (Master's)

Allison has a B.S. in Geology from Millsaps College in Mississippi.  Allison is just beginning her studies in Fall 2013.  Her thesis will test the applicability of a model we developed to predict shoal locations in the Cahaba River in other systems, specifically the Flint River in GA.
